STEAM Lab Reports : Lego Ratio and an Illusion Multiplication Art Activity

The use of legos can be a great math tool that is fun for scholars and actively engages their learning. Our scholars in Ms. G's class delved into much more than math during their Lego Ratio STEAM Lab activity while other scholars enjoyed an art integrated activity with their multiplication lesson.

In the Lego Ratio STEAM Lab activity, scholars at One School were able to see the practical use of science, engineering, arts, and math. They first found the ratio of red, blue, and yellow bricks and followed certain directions to build ratios within a building. For the second part of this activity, our creative scholars modeled their own design that was later re-created at a larger scale while developing hypotheses and exercising trial and error tests to find their answers.

Other scholars were introduced to Paul Klee and the art movement of cubism in Ms. G's second activity titled "Illusion Multiplication Art Activity" . In this lesson, the scholars were able to see examples of cubism and tessellations. They were then inspired to create their own version using multiplication and graph paper.

Check out the scholar driven exploration!

Katelyn Bailey had the thrill of representing One School of the Arts in front of 6 million people on the nationally syndicated show Daily Buzz last week. She was part of a Cinderella makeover that was used to promote the national release of the new Cinderella feature film shot by Disney.  (One School Entertainment Arts teacher Mr. Bailey had the pleasure of getting up at 3:40AM to escort his daughter to the set! )
Not only was Katelyn able to represent our school she also had the honor of having the segment viewed by Disney executives for the actual film! Watch the fun as she is turned from a school girl into a princess!
Β

Another of the Scholars that works with Mr. Bailey in Entertainment Training is Lelani Fry. She was able to audition for a national Disney commercial/PR campaign and even landed the part! Lelani is one of the first scholars to book a national spot with Disney that will be seen by millions of people.
"We are so excited for her and her growth." said Mr. Bailey,  "Lelani has always had an outgoing and engaging personality but the work she has been doing in the after-school program on Tuesdays, really put her over the top. She was able to navigate the audition and book the job! We hope to reach out to other scholars and offer the same opportunities for all that are interested."

The Pop Shop Entertainment Training (After School Program) will be developing some unique summer camp options in the next few weeks to hopefully help scholars develop foundational skills in the performing arts. These skills will allow them to excel in the program next year. Please join us in congratulating both Katelyn and Lelani!  God is truly opening some amazing doors.

Dream Projects in Honor of Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, we remember the words and actions of inspirational leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr and Harriet Tubman. They taught us to stand up for what we believe in and to do whatever it takes to promote positive impact on our world. It was with their ability to dream of a better future, to inspire others with the strength of their voice and to act by taking a stand against those who ignored the possibilities of a nation without racism and discrimination.

During this year's African American Month, our scholars begin to understand the significance of a dream and most importantly, the freedom to do so. Our digital media class collaborated with their peers to create short videos called "Dream Projects".

DIY Krabby Patties Segment on The Daily Buzz

Our Culinary Director was invited to host a Sponge Bob Square Pants cooking segment on The Daily Buzz! If you're not familiar with the show, it's a variety morning show that is broadcast live to millions of viewers each weekday morning. She also brought two of our very talented scholars with her as her prep cooks. But being on live TV requires much more than cooking skills. Thanks to Doug Bailey and the intensive training from his after school Pop Shop program these two scholars were well versed in live TV etiquette! Great job everyone!

Honor Roll Breakfast Video

Scholars put their skills to the test for the second time this semester in Digital Media/Video class. They collaborated as a team to create a short video highlighting some behind the scenes and live action from our Honor Roll Breakfast. Enjoy the video and the original soundtrack composed by our scholars. Thanks again to our wonderful PTA team for putting this event together and for providing the yummy food!
